No big deal, but I was just awarded WRITING’S GREATEST PRIZE! No, not the Nobel Prize in Literature. Even better—I won the ”Vile Pun” category in the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest.

As background, the BLFC challenges writers to compose the first sentence for the worst imaginable novel. It has various genre categories (Adventure, Romance, Science Fiction, etc.), and there’s also one for “Vile Puns.”

As nothing is more unfunny than explaining a joke, here goes:

A Peer is a member of the British aristocracy, and telling someone to “take a long walk off a short pier” is a way of telling someone to get lost.

So anyway, you can imagine how proud I am of this pun! And if you read any of the award-winning entries and think, “I could write worse than THAT,” be sure to enter this contest next year. 🙂

Hey, did you notice that I have two new books out? These STEAM activity books were a lot of fun to write. Hopefully, there’s fun to read as well. ROBOTS and SPACE are available now, and the next one in the series, BUILDING, is coming soon!

  • Fun science activity books for readers 4-8
  • Gorgeously illustrated with simple, easy-to follow instructions
  • Designed to help kids understand science, technology and the natural world

Each book in this STEAM series features more than 20 fun and engaging hands-on activities for young readers.

A fascinating thing about writing books is that I almost never know who’s reading them. I just have to embrace the mystery.

And a fun thing about having a sister who works in schools and libraries is that she revealed part of the mystery today, after a student pulled The Drake Equation out of his backpack to read!
